An implant overdenture is a removable denture that anchors to 2 or 4 implants: far more stable than a traditional plate and more affordable than a fixed prosthesis. I explain the four options, when each one is right and their real prices, from $3,500 to $5,000 USD per arch.
When your old denture just can't cope anymore
If you wear a complete removable denture, you probably know the problem: it moves when you talk, loosens when you eat, forces you to use adhesive creams and sometimes hurts. Many of my patients arrive tired of that, but also worried about the cost of a full fixed rehabilitation. For them there is a middle-ground solution that almost no one has explained well: the implant overdenture.
In this article I explain clearly what it is, how it differs from a fixed All-on-4 prosthesis, the four options I offer and, something almost no one puts in writing, its real prices. No fine print.
What is an implant overdenture?
An overdenture is a removable denture that, instead of resting only on the gum, anchors to implants placed in the bone. It is held in place with clips (button type) or with a bar that joins the implants, which keeps it firm: it does not move when you talk or eat. The big difference from a fixed prosthesis is that you can remove it to clean it and put it back.
Put simply: it is far more stable and comfortable than a traditional plate, and more affordable than a fixed screw-retained prosthesis. That makes it an excellent entry point to recover function and confidence without the price tag of a full fixed rehabilitation.
Overdenture or fixed prosthesis: which is right for you?
That is the key question, and the honest answer is that it depends on you. Here is the summary:
- Overdenture (removable): more affordable, very easy to clean (you take it out and clean it with a hard-bristle brush) and stable while you wear it. Ideal if you want a big improvement over your current denture with a lower investment than a fixed prosthesis. One honest detail you should know: its internal attachments (the parts that hold it in place) wear down with use and need to be replaced roughly every 10 months. It is a simple, low-cost maintenance, but worth keeping in mind.
- Fixed screw-retained All-on-4 prosthesis: it does not come out, only the specialist handles it and it feels the closest to your natural teeth. It costs more ($10,000 to $20,000 USD per arch, depending on the prosthesis, whether acrylic or with zirconia crowns) and is the option when you want to forget you are wearing a prosthesis at all. Unlike the overdenture, it does not require replacing attachments periodically.
If you want to dig deeper into that comparison, I wrote a dedicated guide on fixed implant versus removable prosthesis and another on the fixed screw-retained prosthesis.
The four overdenture options (and their prices)
I offer four configurations depending on the number of implants and the retention system. These are the real prices per arch, in US dollars:
| Option | Price (USD) |
|---|---|
| Overdenture with 2 implants and prosthesis | from $3,500 |
| Overdenture with 2 implants, retention bar and prosthesis | from $4,000 |
| Overdenture with 4 implants and prosthesis | from $4,500 |
| Overdenture with 4 implants, retention bar and prosthesis | from $5,000 |
The difference between 2 and 4 implants is stability: with 4, and especially with a bar, the prosthesis sits firmer and spreads the forces better. The retention bar joins the implants together and gives greater retention than individual clips.
Why do all the prices say "from"?
Because the bone rules, and I cannot promise you a closed price without seeing you. If you have good bone, the treatment is more straightforward. If there is bone loss, we often need bone regeneration or a graft so the implants anchor well, and that changes the plan and the cost. That is why I give a realistic range and confirm the exact value after reviewing your scan at the evaluation. I would rather tell you "from" honestly than give you a pretty number that later falls apart.
Which brands and implants I work with
I use Straumann and Neodent, two world-reference brands from the same group, with quality certifications from the strictest countries (including the U.S. FDA) and guaranteed spare parts in Colombia. That matters: an overdenture is a long-term treatment, and you want implants whose parts and maintenance are still available many years from now. If the topic interests you, I explain the differences between Straumann and Neodent in another article.
How we decide your case
There is no single answer. At the evaluation I review your bone with a 3D scan, understand your priorities (budget, comfort, esthetics) and show you the options with their real prices so you decide informed. Sometimes the best decision is to start with a firm, affordable overdenture; other times it is better to go straight to a fixed prosthesis. What matters is that the choice is yours, with all the information on the table. You can see the whole process in my dental implants service and in full oral rehabilitation.
If you are coming from abroad, this is one of the options dental tourism patients ask about most: a big improvement in just a few days of travel and with an exact quote before you book your flight.
What now?
If you are tired of a denture that moves but a full fixed prosthesis is out of your budget, the implant overdenture may be exactly the middle ground you need. Message me on WhatsApp, tell me about your case and, if you have a recent X-ray or scan, I will review it to give you an exact quote in USD before you make any decision.
