Not all implant brands are equal. I explain the three seals that make a brand trustworthy (scientific backing, regulatory clearance and track record) and which ones I use in my practice in Medellín: Straumann, Neodent and DioImplant.
Does the implant brand matter? Yes, but not the way you think
When a patient asks me which implant brand I am going to place, I always welcome the question. The implant is a device that will live inside your bone for many years, ideally for life, so knowing what is placed and why is part of a well-made decision.
That said, I want to be clear from the start: the brand matters, but it is not the only thing that matters, nor even the most important. What is valuable is not memorizing names, but understanding what makes an implant brand truly trustworthy. That is what I will explain, and at the end I will tell you which ones I work with in my practice in Medellín and why.
What makes an implant brand trustworthy: the three seals
Not all implants on the market are equal. There are thousands of brands in the world, and the difference between a serious one and a doubtful one shows in three concrete things:
- Real scientific backing: published clinical studies, with years of follow-up, showing how the implant behaves in real patients over the long term. Serious brands document survival rates above 95% at 10 years.
- Clearance from quality agencies: trustworthy brands meet the standards of the world's most demanding regulators, such as the FDA in the United States, the CE mark in Europe and Health Canada, and they are also registered with INVIMA to be used in Colombia.
- Track record in the market: years, sometimes decades, being placed in millions of patients, with a stable prosthetic system and future availability of components. This last point is key: an implant from a brand that disappears leaves you without compatible parts if you ever need an adjustment.
When a brand meets these three seals, you are looking at an implant you can work with confidently. When one is missing, it is wise to be cautious.
The global standard: the brands that set the pace
Worldwide there is a small group of brands recognized for their research and results, the ones that tend to set the standard of modern implantology. Among the most scientifically documented are Straumann (Switzerland), Nobel Biocare (of Swedish origin), Zimmer Biomet and Dentsply Sirona (United States), along with Neodent, which belongs to the Straumann Group. These are names that appear again and again in long-term studies precisely because they have spent years investing in evidence.
Knowing this landscape gives you a reference point. But an important detail: it is not about "having every brand", but about working with the ones that meet the standard and are reliably available in the country, so your treatment is safe today and maintainable tomorrow.
The implant brands I use in my practice in Medellín
In my practice I work with three systems that more than meet the three seals above, and I choose among them according to what your case needs:
Straumann (Switzerland). For many, it is the global premium benchmark. Its prestige rests on decades of scientific research. It stands out for its SLActive surface, designed to accelerate integration with the bone, and for its Roxolid alloy (titanium and zirconium), stronger than pure titanium. I usually reserve it for cases where I seek the greatest possible margin of safety.
Neodent (Straumann Group). One of the most widely used brands in Latin America, backed by the research and manufacturing of the world leader. Its Acqua surface is documented in more than 150 scientific articles and performs very well in demanding protocols such as immediate loading. It offers high performance at a more accessible cost, which makes it an excellent choice for most cases.
DioImplant (South Korea). A manufacturer with US FDA clearance and a presence in more than 60 countries, recognized for its integration with digital technology for guided surgery. It is a solid, predictable brand that broadens my options to fit each patient.

Why I work with several brands and not just one
Some clinics work with a single brand. I prefer to have several good options on the table, all with scientific backing and regulatory clearance, because that lets me put your case at the center of the decision rather than the other way around. Not all patients need the same thing: the quantity and quality of bone, the type of rehabilitation and your possibilities all influence which is the best choice for you.
Choosing the right brand for each case, and explaining why, is part of doing things with sound judgment and honesty.
The most important thing is still who places the implant
I will tell you frankly: the best implant in the world, poorly planned or poorly placed, fails. And a good implant, well diagnosed, well placed and well maintained, can last many years. The brand is an important starting point, but the real deciding factor is the team behind it: the diagnosis with a 3D scan, the precision of the surgery and your maintenance over time.
