It is the question almost everyone arrives with, and the honest answer is that it depends. But "it depends" is not a dodge if I tell you on what: how many teeth, which material, the state of your gums and your bite, and what needs to happen first. Here I show you how to read a quote and how to spot one that is not complete.
How much does a smile design cost? It is the question almost everyone arrives with, and the honest answer is that it depends. But "it depends" is not a dodge if I tell you on what.
When someone messages me on WhatsApp asking for the price, I know there are two things behind it: wanting to look good, and fear of being overcharged. Both are legitimate, and both are solved by the same thing, information. So this article will not hand you a figure to shop around with from clinic to clinic. It will give you something more useful: an understanding of what a smile design quote is made of, how to read it, what to ask for in writing, and which signs should make you pause.
If what you want in the end is a number for your own case, that number exists, it is delivered in writing, and it comes out of a consultation. I will show you how to get there.
Why does the figure for your case come from a consultation and not a message?
A smile design is not a product taken off a shelf, it is a plan built on your mouth. Two people can ask for "the same thing" and need very different work: one has healthy teeth and only wants to correct shape and color, the other has inflamed gums, wear from grinding, and a bite that has to be protected before anything goes on top. If you ask me the cost before I have seen anything, all I can give you is the published starting point, which is exactly what you will read further down.
What I can do right now is walk you through the variables, because once you know them, any quote you receive, here or anywhere else, stops being a mysterious number.
What actually decides the cost?
- The number of teeth. Some smiles are transformed by working on the six front teeth, others need eight or ten so the result looks even when you smile. How many are treated is not a matter of taste, it is decided by what your smile shows when you talk and laugh.
- The material. Composite and ceramic do not cost the same because they are not made the same way and do not age the same way. It is the variable that moves the quote the most, and it gets its own section below.
- The state of your gums and your bite. Healthy gums and a balanced bite are the foundation for everything else. If either is missing, it has to be addressed first, and that goes into the plan.
- The laboratory. With ceramic, each piece is made by a dental technician from the design I send, and that work has its own cost inside the quote.
- What needs to happen first. A deep cleaning, whitening to match the teeth that will not be covered, gum contouring, or orthodontics beforehand can all be part of the path. Each has its own value and should appear as a separate line.
- The digital design beforehand. Photographing, measuring and projecting your smile before touching a tooth is work, and it is the work that prevents surprises. In my practice it is part of the smile design, but that is not the case everywhere, so it is worth asking whether it is included.
Composite or ceramic: the difference that moves the quote the most
I will explain this at the level of criteria, because the choice is not "which one is better" but which one suits your case, your time and your budget.
Direct composite is sculpted by me, on your tooth, in the chair. It is done in one or a few visits, needs no laboratory, and if a piece ever chips or stains, it is repaired or replaced without starting over. It is the entry point, and that is why it is the figure I publish: a smile design in direct composite starts from $5,000,000 COP, and I say "from" because that figure grows with the number of teeth and with whatever needs to be done first.
Ceramic follows a different path. It is designed, the tooth is prepared with minimal or no reduction depending on the case, each veneer is made in the laboratory, and it is bonded at a later visit. More visits, more hands, and a material that holds its shine and color better over the years. That is why it costs more than composite. The exact figure for your case is given to you in writing after the consultation, once I know how many teeth are involved and what your mouth needs beforehand.
Neither is a bad decision when it is properly indicated. The bad decision is choosing the material by price without knowing whether your bite and your gums will support it. If you want to go deeper into what sets one veneer apart from another, I covered it under aesthetic dentistry.
How do you read a smile design quote?
A well-made quote looks more like a recipe than a price tag. This is what you should be able to read in it, line by line:
- How many teeth, and which ones. Not "smile design", but "veneers on teeth 13 through 23", for example. If it does not say how many, you do not know what you are comparing.
- Which material on each one. Composite or ceramic, and if ceramic, which kind. Mixed cases exist, and that should be written down too.
- Whether the digital design is included or charged separately. And whether it includes the mock-up, the stage where you see the proposal placed over your own teeth before deciding.
- The preliminary treatments, each with its own value. Cleaning, whitening, gums, orthodontics. If they are folded into one global figure, you cannot tell what happens if one of them turns out to be unnecessary.
- Temporaries and follow-up visits. With ceramic, you wear temporaries while the lab works. Ask whether they are included and how many check-ups come afterwards.
- The night guard. If you clench or grind, it is what protects the work while you sleep. In my practice the protective night guard is included with full-mouth rehabilitations and with a complete smile design. In any quote, it helps to see whether it is included or charged separately.
- Payment terms. When payments are due and in which currency, especially if you are coming from abroad.
When a quote has all of this, comparing two clinics becomes possible, because you are comparing the same thing. When it does not, the lowest number can end up being the most expensive one.
What should you ask for in writing before you say yes?
- The complete plan with the number of teeth, the material and the preliminary steps, signed by the person who will treat you.
- The digital design or simulation of your case, so you can look at it calmly at home and not decide in the chair.
- What happens if a piece chips or comes loose in the first months, and how it is handled.
- How many visits there are, how long each one takes and, if you are traveling, how many days you need in Medellín.
- The name of the specialist who will do the work and her professional registration. My full profile is at Dr. Carolina Macareno, oral rehabilitation specialist in Medellín, with license and registry numbers, so you can verify everything before you come.
What a quote should tell you clearly
- It does not say how many teeth. A "full smile design" with no number of teeth is not a quote, it is a headline.
- It does not name the material, or just says "veneers". Composite and ceramic are not interchangeable in price or in handling, and if it is not written down, it can be switched later.
- You were quoted without being seen or asked for photos. A fixed figure over chat, before any examination, means it was decided without knowing anything about your mouth.
- There is no prior design and no mock-up. If you are going to change the shape of your teeth, you have the right to see it first, not to discover it at the end.
- Gums and bite are nowhere to be found. If nobody checked how you close or the state of your gums, the work is being planned on a foundation nobody evaluated.
None of these signs means you are about to get bad work. They mean you are still missing information, and you should ask for it before paying.
What does the consultation include?
The consultation with me, in person or online, starts from $150,000 COP and includes the clinical history, a 3D intraoral scan, bite analysis, diagnosis and a written quote. X-rays are not included but are always necessary: if you already have them we use them, and if not, I give you the order to have them taken at the radiology center in the neighboring tower. With that in hand I can tell you how many teeth, which material and what needs to happen first, and then, yes, the number for your case. You can book it under diagnostic consultation.
If before booking you only want to know whether your case calls for a smile design or for something else, you can send me photos of your smile on WhatsApp and the team will point you to the next step.
If you are coming from outside Colombia
Every week I hear from patients in the United States, Panama and Puerto Rico who already have a quote at home and want to compare it. Everything you have just read applies in the same way, with one practical difference: the first consultation can be done by video with your photos and X-rays, and the plan is closed in writing before you buy your ticket, so you travel knowing how many days you need and what you will receive. I see patients in Spanish and in English. What changes between a quote here and one there, and why, is in veneers in Colombia versus the United States.
What I will not tell you
I will not tell you what your smile costs without having seen it, because that would be making up your case. Nor will I tell you that composite is "worse" or that ceramic is "the good one", because I have seen well-made composite accompany a patient for years, and ceramic placed over unhealthy gums that did not get far. The material does not decide the outcome, the indication does.
What I will tell you is this: if you already have a quote in hand and, after reading this, it is missing lines, ask for them to be completed. And if you want a second look with no obligation to stay, bring your quote to the consultation. We will read it together, I will explain what each part means and, if it is well done, I will tell you so. You will find me at Cra. 25 #1A Sur-155, office 1353, Edificio Platinum Superior, El Poblado, Medellín, and on WhatsApp at +57 316 397 5232.
Frequently asked questions
▸How much does a smile design cost in Medellín?
It depends on the number of teeth, the material, the state of your gums and bite, and what needs to be done first. In my practice the published starting point is direct composite, from $5,000,000 COP; ceramic costs more and its exact figure is given in writing after the consultation.
▸Why does ceramic cost more than composite?
Because each ceramic veneer is made by a laboratory from the specialist's design, requires preparing the tooth, wearing temporaries and bonding at a later visit. More visits and more hands, in exchange for a material that holds its color and shine better over time.
▸What should a smile design quote say?
How many teeth and which ones, which material on each, whether the digital design and mock-up are included, the preliminary treatments priced separately, temporaries and follow-ups, and payment terms. If any of those is missing, ask for it to be completed before you pay.
▸Can I find out the price without coming to the consultation?
You can know the starting point and the variables, which is what this article explains, but the figure for your case comes out of the consultation, with a scan, X-rays and bite analysis. If you first want to know whether you are a candidate, you can send photos of your smile on WhatsApp and the team will guide you.
